Free Software Foundation TamilNadu (FSFTN), in association with the Free Software Movement of India (FSMI), organized a Regional Convention for Academicians & Researchers on November 14th at Institute of Financial Management & Research (IFMR), Nungambakkam, Chennai. These conventions are part of the activities of Academics Initiative of FSMI.

The Regional Convention included talks which focused on Research using Free Software tools and its applicability to Education. The speakers included eminent personalities in the academic front like Prof. K.S. Rajan, IIIT Hyderabad, Prof. L. Pratap Reddy, JNTU, Prof. Shankar Balachandran, IIT Madras. The Convention was a great starting point for those who want to research using cutting edge technologies that are available in the Free Software domain. It will help to add a new dimension to teaching by employing tools which can be studied and modified by the students as well as the faculty.

FSFTN has been an active promoter of the use of Free Software by conducting workshops, seminars, talks and taking up projects all over TamilNadu. FSFTN is a part of FSMI, which is a national coalition of various organisations which promote the adoption of Free Software. The Academics Initiative of FSMI aims at strengthening research using Open Models. It will help the faculty foray into new avenues of research and equip them with better tools for teaching.
